WhatLingo stores certain data locally on your device:

  • Messages from your WhatsApp conversations that you choose to translate

  • Translations of these messages

  • Sender information related to these messages

This data is stored exclusively on your device and is not stored on Whitespectre servers.

Usage Metrics

We collect anonymous usage metrics using a non-identifiable hash to track average token usage. This information cannot be linked back to individual users and helps us optimize the App's performance and resource usage.

2. Third-Party Services

The App utilizes the following third-party services:


WhatsApp Web


WhatLingo connects to WhatsApp Web to access your messages for translation. We do not store your WhatsApp credentials or session information on our servers. When you uninstall the App, the connection to WhatsApp Web is terminated.


OpenRouter AI Services


WhatLingo uses Google Gemini AI (https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs) and OpenRouter (https://openrouter.ai) to process translations. When you use the App to translate messages, the content is sent to Google or OpenRouter's API along with a translation prompt. This data is handled in accordance with their privacy and terms of service

OpenRouter may route your translation requests to various AI providers, including OpenAI and Google. The retention policies for translated content vary by provider and are governed by their respective privacy policies.

3. How We Use Information

The primary purpose of data processing within WhatLingo is to:

  • Translate messages between languages

  • Display translated conversations within the App

  • Provide a seamless multilingual messaging experience

We do not:

  • Use your data for advertising purposes

  • Store personal user information

  • Sell or share your data with third parties (except as necessary to provide translation services through OpenRouter)

  • Analyze message content for purposes other than translation

4. Data Security

We employ the following measures to ensure data security:

  • All data stored on your device is subject to iOS security protections

  • Communication with third-party services uses https secure protocols

  • We do not store your message data

  • All message data is translated anonymously i.e. not directly linked to your WhatsApp account

5. Data Retention

Message data and translations are stored only on your device. You control this data and can:

  • Remove all data by uninstalling the App

We do not retain copies of your messages or translations on our servers.

6. User Rights

Under privacy regulations including GDPR and CCPA, you have rights regarding your personal data. Since WhatLingo primarily stores data locally on your device, you can exercise most rights directly through the App:

  • Right to Access: Your data is accessible within the App

  • Right to Deletion: Delete data by uninstalling the App and removing the link with WhatsApp Web

  • Right to Restrict Processing: You can uninstall the App and remove the link with WhatsApp Web

7. Age Restrictions

WhatLingo is not intended for use by children under 13 years of age in the United States or under 16 years of age in the European Union. If you are under the applicable age restriction, please do not use the App.

Changes and clarifications will take effect immediately upon their posting on our website or within the App. If we make material changes to this Policy, we will notify you through the App or by other means to provide you with the opportunity to review the changes.
